Helping people make safer food choices using official government data.
FoodHygieneCheck.com brings together official food hygiene ratings and restaurant inspection data from government agencies across the United Kingdom, United States, and Denmark. Our mission is simple: make it easy for anyone to check the food safety record of a restaurant, takeaway, or food business before they eat.
All data on this site comes directly from official government sources. In the UK, we use data from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland. In the United States, we aggregate inspection data from the NYC Department of Health, Chicago Department of Public Health, and other city health departments. In Denmark, data comes from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (Fødevarestyrelsen) through their Smiley scheme.
We do not create, modify, or influence any ratings. Every score, grade, and inspection result you see on this site is exactly as published by the relevant government authority. We believe that food safety information should be freely accessible to everyone, and we present it in a clear, easy-to-understand format.
We regularly download data from official government APIs and open data portals. The data is processed to remove duplicates (keeping only the most recent inspection per establishment), normalised for consistent display, and published as static web pages for fast loading and accessibility.
Our platform covers three rating systems:
United Kingdom (FHRS/FHIS): The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme rates businesses from 0 (urgent improvement required) to 5 (very good). Scotland uses the Food Hygiene Information Scheme with Pass/Improvement Required outcomes.
United States: Each city has its own system. NYC uses letter grades (A/B/C) based on violation points. Chicago uses Pass/Fail. We present each city's data using its native rating system.
Denmark (Smiley): The world's first mandatory food hygiene display scheme, using smiley faces from happy (best) to angry (worst). Businesses with four consecutive happy smileys earn the Elite Smiley.
FoodHygieneCheck.com is operated by Copyvisor OÜ, a company registered in Tallinn, Estonia. We are an independent platform with no affiliation to any government agency, restaurant chain, or food delivery service.
If you have questions, feedback, or data correction requests, please note that ratings are controlled by the relevant government authority. We update our data as soon as new results are published by official sources.
